I woke up earlier than I use to do, I didn’t know exactly why. Perhaps it was because it was my first day at university and I was nervous for not knowing anyone there: all my friends had chosen other universities to study at and I had chosen Exeter’s.
I got out of my bed and took a quick shower. When I finished, I dressed up with some trousers, a shirt and my black Converse and went downstairs to see breakfast was already prepared. The desk was full of sweets, cookies, toasts, an orange juice jug and two cups of coffee. “Mum, you know I can’t eat all of this, right?” “Emily, you need strength for your first day at university” she said taking off her apron and putting some napkins on the desk. She was the typical overprotective mum that would fuss over her children even if they were nineteen, which was my case, and like you could not argue with her if she filled the desk with delicious food, I started eating some toasts. “Honey, have you checked whether you’ve packed everything you need or not?” asked me my father from the corridor. “Yes dad, I’ve done it a thousand of times now.” They wouldn’t help placating my nerves, to be true. After eating some fairy cakes and a cup of coffee, I took my luggage and hugged and kissed my mum. “Honey, I want you to know we’ll miss you very much. Work hard and have fun” said my mum with tears in her eyes. “Oh, come on mum, you’re making me want to cry as well” I told her wrapping my arms around her. “Come here, daddy.” He did so and then he kissed my forehead. “I love you” I told them smiling while taking the car’s keys and closing the door behind me. I put my luggage on the Ford’s back seats and started. Nevermind by Nirvana went with me during the drive to the campus.
I parked where I could, took my luggage and stopped to see what was what I was going to face throughout the entire year. There were people all around going or leaving places, groups of friends smoking on the grass or playing cards and so on. I took a breath and walked to the hall. There were even more people there. I looked for the noticeboard to see which room was going to be the one where I was staying this year: room 505. I took the little map I had on my pocket and headed to my new room.
After asking a few people, I could finally get to it. I opened the door. It wasn’t that bad: it had a big living room with TV, a sofa, an armchair and a desk with three chairs, a big kitchen and, wait, two bedrooms? I didn’t know I had to share my room with someone. Hope it’s not a boy, hope it’s not a boy… Was what I was thinking while unpacking. I didn’t want a boy to see my face in the mornings or to complain when I had my period. Just no.
I sighed when I finished placing my posters behind the door and on the walls, putting my clothes in the closet and the rest in the bathroom. My tummy moaned. Now is when I miss you, mum. I didn’t have the skills my mum had in cooking, so I prepared something easy: pasta. I was actually quite happy with the result. I went to the living room and started eating.
I was delighting with the delicacy I had prepared (though I shouldn’t say so), when I heard the door opening and turned to see who it was. A thin and not too tall boy entered the room. He had straight black hair, well-defined features and the bluest eyes I had ever seen. Something he had made me not to take my eyes off him, but the noise my folk did when it dropped woke me up from that blissful moment.
He picked it up. “Here you have” he told me giving it to me. “I suppose you’re my room-mate. By the way, I’m Matt” he said smiling and letting me see he had a crooked tooth, but that didn’t make him less beautiful. I took the folk from his hands and our fingers touched, which sent me shivers down my spine. I swallowed saliva. “I’m Emily” I told him without taking my eyes off him. “Huh, you could’ve waited for me to have lunch together and get to know each other better, don’t you think?” He said while leaving his luggage in his room. “I’m sorry, I-I didn’t know I was going to have a room-mate and even less when you were going to arrive” I blushed. “I was joking, silly you” he said getting laid on the sofa like if he was at home. Wait, what? Had he just called me ‘silly’? Like if we knew each other for ages! I continued eating my plate of pasta without looking at him because I was enough nervous with his presence. “And what do you study?” I didn’t quite expect that question, so I choked on my own saliva. I started coughing and I blushed again. “Uh uh are you okay?” he said standing up and getting closer to me. “Y-yes” I could say after drinking my glass of water. “Look, I know you don’t really like my presence in here because you thought you were going to live alone and I’m sorry I acted like if we knew each other. I understand you need some time and space to get to know each other better. I really want to get on well with you” “No, it’s not just that. It’s… duh, let’s leave it here” “No, come on, tell me” he begged me. “I’m just surprised” I achieved to look at him without blushing. “Is that good?” he asked. “I suppose so” I stood up and went to wash the dish. “By the way, I study Finance” I told him from the kitchen. “What about you?” “I study Fine Arts. It’s my second year in here” “So you’re 20 years old, right?” I asked curious. “That’s it” he answered. “Look! We’re getting to know each other!” he laughed, and I did so as well. “I also have a feeling we’ll get on well” he winked at me. I blushed. Again. I wish, Matt, I wish, I thought.
